New Ghis

Nueva Ghis

New Ghis is a Ghiscari city built on a small island in the Gulf of Grief, at the northern edge of the Summer Sea. It is the youngest and smallest of the cities that survived the fall of the Old Empire, yet also the most active of them, openly reaching to bring back the glory of Ghis.

Its strength lies in the Iron Legions, companies of freeborn soldiers drilled in the manner of the Unsullied, which give the city real weight among the powers of Slaver's Bay.

Chapter 1

A stop on the way to Qarth

Books only

New Ghis sits on a small island in the Gulf of Grief, south of the isle of Ghaen. It is the youngest and smallest of the Ghiscari cities that outlasted the fall of the Old Empire, and the most restless of them, openly reaching to become Old Ghis reborn.

When Arstan Whitebeard and Strong Belwas sail from Pentos to Qarth, they put in at New Ghis along the way — the city's first appearance in the story, little more than a port of call on a longer voyage.

Chapter 2

The Iron Legions fall in with Yunkai

Books only

Hizdahr zo Loraq boasts of great sway over New Ghis, a city that leans heavily on its slaves. When war breaks out against Daenerys Targaryen, New Ghis joins the Yunkish coalition. Quentyn Martell finds this unsurprising — both cities share Ghiscari blood and the same dependence on slavery.

The city sends its six Iron Legions to the fighting, 36,000 men armed and drilled after the fashion of the Unsullied, together with a hundred armored elephants, split between the sieges of Astapor and Meereen. Three war galleys also join the Qartheen fleet anchored in Meereen's bay.

To the eye, the Ghiscari legions look more formidable than Yunkai's slave soldiers. Tyrion Lannister is not so sure: he suspects they're organized much like the Unsullied, but with one difference that matters — the eunuchs know no other life, while the men of New Ghis are freeborn citizens serving three-year terms.
