Quentyn Martell

Born at Sunspear, Quentyn is sent as a boy to Ghost Hill, fostered under Lord Anders Yronwood. His father arranges it to settle the old debt between the two houses, opened years earlier when Prince Oberyn Martell killed Lord Edgar Yronwood in a duel. His mother, Mellario, objects, thinking him too young to be sent away, and the decision strains his parents' marriage.

At Ghost Hill he forms a lasting friendship with Cletus Yronwood, Lord Anders's eldest son, and with the circle around him, including Archibald Yronwood. He falls quietly for Ynys, Lord Anders's eldest daughter, until she marries and leaves; his first kiss comes from one of the Drinkwater twins, and he never learns which one it was.

His father writes urging him to learn all he can from his maester and his master-at-arms, since he will one day have to rule Dorne, though the full reason behind those words escapes Quentyn. He learns to ride at six and trains with sword, lance and shield as soon as he can hold them. At eighteen, Lord Anders knights him, passing over his uncle Oberyn's offer to do it himself.

Quentyn is believed to be marching with the Yronwood host, but he has actually slipped across the Narrow Sea in secret. At Sunspear, his sister Arianne misreads his absence, fearing their father has sent him to hire the Golden Company to strip her of her place as heir to Dorne.

Faced with Arianne's suspicion, Prince Doran finally tells her what he has kept hidden for years: a secret marriage pact, and the real reason Quentyn is sailing east.

Quentyn sails from Volantene Planky Town with Gerris Drinkwater, Willam Wells, the cousins Cletus and Archibald Yronwood, and Maester Kedry. They cross the Narrow Sea to Lys, where Quentyn poses as a merchant, then change ships to board the Meraxes. Corsairs board them en route and kill Willam, Cletus and Kedry.

The three survivors are stranded in Volantis longer than planned, since the war in Slaver's Bay has closed off passage to Meereen and no captain will take them. Disguised, they end up joining the Windblown, a sellsword company hired by Yunkai; among the mercenaries Quentyn is nicknamed "Frog" and serves as Archibald's squire.

The three Dornishmen fight alongside the Windblown during the siege of Astapor. When they try to desert north of Yunkai to reach Daenerys on their own, the Tattered Prince stops them and orders them to join her within the sellsword ranks instead, wanting a foot in both camps should fortunes turn. The Stormcrows eventually find them, and Daario Naharis brings them into Meereen.

Daario presents them to Daenerys as new Stormcrow recruits, but the Dornishmen reveal themselves as knights and ask to speak in private. Quentyn then hands over a sealed scroll, signed by Ser Willem Darry and Prince Oberyn Martell and witnessed by the Sealord of Braavos: the pact by which Viserys Targaryen was to marry Arianne in exchange for Dorne's support. With Viserys dead in Vaes Dothrak, Quentyn offers himself as Daenerys's husband instead.

Daario mocks him, and Daenerys orders the three treated courteously. She announces her coming marriage to Hizdahr zo Loraq and gives them rooms in the Great Pyramid. Ser Barristan believes Quentyn's arrival changes everything; Daenerys is less sure, and thinks of Quaithe's prophecy about the "son of the sun."

The next day Quentyn approaches Daenerys, who tells him she will one day seek Dorne's help. He exposes the other Windblown men who had infiltrated the Stormcrows, who are arrested. At the banquet celebrating peace between Meereen and Yunkai, Daenerys takes him to meet Rhaegal and Viserion; the dragons frighten him, but he still tells her of his own Targaryen blood.

Daenerys tells him he has no place in Meereen and urges him to go home, warning that her court is no safe place for him; Quentyn refuses. He is denied an audience the day the Pit of Daznak opens; he is present when Daenerys flees on Drogon and when King Hizdahr receives Captain Groleo's head. Barristan questions him over Strong Belwas's poisoning and finds him innocent, then advises the three Dornishmen to go home and forget the pact. Quentyn refuses — he cannot return empty-handed.

With Daenerys missing, his companions want to go home to Dorne, but Quentyn decides to try to tame one of the queen's dragons, trusting to his own Targaryen blood. He arranges for the Windblown to help capture Rhaegal and Viserion in exchange for Pentos, and signs the agreement with the Tattered Prince.

Disguised as Brazen Beasts, Quentyn and his companions reach the pit where the dragons are chained. The password they were given is useless, since Barristan's coup happens that same day and the real guards don't know it. Quentyn tries to tame Viserion, but Rhaegal bathes his back in fire; the mercenaries flee and both dragons escape.

Missandei tends to him, but Quentyn dies in bed three days later, covered in burns. Barristan, serving as Hand in Daenerys's absence, thinks it would have been kinder if Rhaegal had simply eaten him whole. Archibald and Gerris, imprisoned, insist he did it for love of the queen; Barristan maintains it was duty to Dorne. The surviving Dornish knights agree to carry Barristan's message to the Tattered Prince.
