Shadow Tower

la Torre Sombría

The Shadow Tower is one of the three castles the Night's Watch still keeps manned along the Wall, set at its western end, where the ice starts to brush against the mountains.

Its ranks have produced names that carry weight in the Wall's history, among them Qhorin Half-hand, Redwyn and Mance Rayder.

Chapter 1

Guardian of the west

The Shadow Tower closes off the Wall's western side. Westwatch-by-the-Bridge sits on one flank, Garita on the other.

By around 298 years after the Conquest the castle housed close to two hundred brothers, commanded by Ser Denys Mallister, with a maester of its own posted within its walls.

Chapter 2

The road to Lorn Point

Redwyn set down in writing the account of a journey he made from the Shadow Tower to Lorn Point, one of the few first-hand chronicles this castle has produced.

Chapter 3

A hundred men for the Fist

Books only

Lord Commander Mormont considered reinforcing Puertapiedra with men drawn from the Shadow Tower.

When the Great Ranging was organized, this castle was tasked with providing a hundred men, placed under Qhorin Half-hand's command, who were to join the brothers riding out from Castle Black. The two parties met at the Fist of the First Men, after Qhorin's men arrived several days behind schedule.
