Stonehelm

Yelmo de Piedra

Stonehelm is the seat of House Swann, raised on the Cape of Wrath where the Stormlands look out across the sea toward Dorne. Its black-and-white stone towers keep watch over the mouth of the Matanzas, the river that carries a road inland from the coast.

Because of where it stands, more than one army marching up from the south has found it the first obstacle in its path.

Chapter 1

The watchtowers of the Matanzas

Books only

The castle stands on the shore of the Sea of Dorne, on the Cape of Wrath, within the stretch known as the Atalaya Roja. It is built beside the Matanzas, the river that opens a road into the interior of the Stormlands, and above its waters rise the two black-and-white stone towers that give the castle its name.

Along that same stretch of river, King Cleoden I Durrandon, joined by three Dornish kings, brought down Drox the Corpsemaker. That alliance between stormlanders and Dornishmen, an uncommon one in the region's annals, was sealed there in blood.

Chapter 2

The Vulture King's siege

Books only

During the Second Dornish War, the Vulture King split his forces and sent half his men to lay siege to Stonehelm. Lord Orys Baratheon took charge of the defense and held the walls against them.

Walter Wyl was among those caught in the siege, trapped with no way past those same walls. Victory cost Orys Baratheon dearly: he set out for Storm's End badly wounded from the fighting and died along the way.

Chapter 3

The dragon kings' passage

Books only

In this chapterJaehaerys I Targaryen

The retinue of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen passed through Stonehelm while trailing the king and Queen Alysanne, who were flying by dragon from Blackhaven to Storm's End to reach his mother's deathbed.

That same country was the birthplace of Flecha Dick, born in a village near the castle's walls.
