Blackhaven

Refugio Negro

Blackhaven stands at the end of the Stone Way, right where the Stormlands give way to the Dornish Marches. Black basalt walls and a dry moat no one has ever seen bottom out have guarded the seat of House Dondarrion for centuries.

Wounded kings, queens who lingered for a harp before flying off on dragonback, and boys who didn't yet know what name they'd carry have all crossed its yard.

Chapter 1

The Vulture King's fire

The Vulture King seized Blackhaven during the Second Dornish War and cut off Lord Harmon Dondarrion's nose while he held it.

Before fleeing, he set the castle ablaze, scorching walls already built from black basalt.

In 54 AC, King Jaehaerys I and his wife Alysanne were making their way back to King's Landing from Oldtown by the long road, through the Dornish Marches and the Stormlands, stopping at Horn Hill and Nightsong before reaching Blackhaven.

They lingered there longer than planned. Ser Simon Dondarrion played the harp, and the king and queen found it hard to leave.

The parting wasn't by choice. A raven arrived with word that Alyssa Velaryon, Jaehaerys's mother, was dying, and the royal couple flew at once on dragonback to Storm's End.

Decades later, a swarm of snakes attacked King Baelor I. His cousin, Prince Aemon, got him out and carried him across the Boneway to Blackhaven.

The castle's maester tended the king until he could be moved on to Storm's End.

Chapter 4

The mystery knight

At only ten years old, Barristan Selmy borrowed a suit of armor and slipped into a tourney at Blackhaven without giving his name.

He lost, and Prince Duncan Targaryen pulled off his helm in front of everyone. For daring to compete so young, Duncan dubbed him "the Bold" from then on.
