Vaes Graddakh

Vaes Graddakh is a ruined city on the far northern edge of Essos, its shores lapped by the Shivering Sea. It began life as Sarys, a city of the old Kingdom of Sarnor, and ended up the last of that kingdom's cities to fall to the Dothraki horselords. The name it carries now was never its own; it was given by the people who tore it down.

Chapter 1

The city on Sarnor's northern edge

Books only

Sarys sat on the northern rim of the Kingdom of Sarnor, its coastline facing the Shivering Sea. Saath lay to its east, and further northeast, Morosh — three neighboring cities strung along a cold, thinly settled coast.

By the time its conquerors arrived, Sarys had already been emptying out on its own for years. It was not a stronghold taken at its height, but a city fading before anyone laid siege to it.

Chapter 2

The last to fall

Books only

Over the course of the Century of Blood, the Dothraki took the cities of the Kingdom of Sarnor one after another. Sarys, already half-emptied, was the last to go — there was little left to defend when the riders rode in.

The victors did not keep its old name. They renamed it in their own tongue as Vaes Graddakh, where vaes means city and graddakh means refuse, or waste: the city of the leavings, the name given to whatever remained of Sarys once they were done with it.

The physical world

El nombre de la ciudad es de origen Dothraki. Vaes significa ciudad y Graddakh significa residuo u excremento, por lo que se podría traducir como "ciudad de los residuos".
