Chett

Chett was born near Pantano de la Bruja, in the Riverlands, the son of a leech collector who sold his catch to maesters; he learned the trade from his father. His pockmarked face kept the village girls away.

He brought flowers to a girl named Bessa hoping to win her over, despite her reputation for sleeping with any man in the village; she spurned him with contempt, and Chett, enraged, killed her.

He was caught near Sietecauces by one of Lord Walder Frey's bastard sons, apparently Walder Ríos, and sent to the Wall.

At the Wall he served four years as a steward, tending the ravens and caring for Maester Aemon alongside Clydas.

He lost the post when Jon Snow convinced Aemon that Samwell Tarly would serve him better as steward; Chett was moved to the kennels.

He took charge of the dogs during the Great Ranging the Night's Watch launched beyond the Wall. Alongside Lark de las Hermanas, he crossed paths with Jon Snow while Jon was speaking with one of Craster's wives, and it was Jon who later overheard them talking about a mutiny.

While searching for Benjen Stark and Ser Waymar Royce, Chett joined a conspiracy of thirteen black brothers set on deserting, among them Daga, Piesligeros, Ollo Manomocha, Donnel Colina, Kedge Ojoblanco, Lark de las Hermanas, Rolley de Villahermana, Karl el Patizambo, Maslyn, Paul el Pequeño, and Serrucho.

The plan was to kill, before fleeing, Lord Commander Jeor Mormont, so command would pass to Ser Ottyn Wythers and he would order a retreat to the Wall; Blane, in command of the Shadow Tower men; Grubbs and Aethan, who were on watch; Dywen and Bannen, so no one could track the deserters; and Samwell Tarly, so he could not send word back to the Wall by raven. Chett himself was to kill Sam and free the ravens, as well as release the dogs — which he had left unfed for days to make them fiercer — amid panicked horses with cut tethers and collapsing tents, while the conspirators fled with food they had been stockpiling.

Hours before the plan was to begin, it started snowing; Chett realized fresh snow would give them away and called off the escape, though he still meant to kill Sam. When he found him, the horn sounded warning that the Others were attacking, and fear made Chett wet himself.

In the rout that followed, the Others killed him and turned him into a wight; he would be one of those who later attacked Sam on his journey south with Gilly.
