Hag's Mire

Hag's Mire is a mud-choked village in the Riverlands, seat of House Nayland, sitting right where the Blue Fork of the Trident unravels into a tangle of streams. Soft ground, leech-filled pools and roads barely worth the name make it the only way across when spring floods sweep the bridges away.
An entire army once slogged through its bogs on the way to a wedding at the Twins, and later a Frey went hunting there for a band of outlaws hiding among the reeds.
Chapter 1
The roads the bog swallows

The mire lies north of where the Blue Fork rises, a stretch of bog where the paths, on the rare occasion they exist, sink under a horse's weight. Its green pools shine in a deceptive way — thick with leeches, ready to swallow anyone who doesn't know the ground.
It's the only way around the Blue Fork when spring floods take out the usual bridges: travelers have to ride upriver past Sevenstreams, where the waters unravel into a tangle of streams, and cross through Hag's Mire from there.

The detour through the mire

Robb StarkWhen Catelyn Tully, her brother Edmure and her son Robb rode out of Riverrun with three thousand five hundred horse, bound for the Twins, where Edmure was to marry one of Lord Walder Frey's daughters, they found the road cut: the flood had swept away the bridge at Fairmarket.
Galbart Glover tried to ford the current at Ram's Ford and nearly drowned; one of his riders wasn't so lucky. The bridge further upstream at Oldstones was gone too, so there was nothing for it but to cross Hag's Mire. Among the bogs they had to abandon half their wagons and split the load between mules and horses.
Chapter 3
The hunt that vanished into the Neck

Walder Frey, the one they called Black Walder, brought hunters and hounds to Hag's Mire, tracking an outlaw band that might have had a hand in the deaths of Merrett and Petyr Frey at a mob's hands. Grilling the local peasants without much gentleness, he learned that the Brotherhood without Banners was holed up there.
The hounds picked up the trail again north of the mire and closed to within half a day of the band before it vanished into the Neck.
