Walder Rivers

His mother died falling from a horse. Walder is a stern, brusque man with grey hair, and though he is no true Frey, he is often trusted with positions of responsibility on the strength of his reputation as a warrior.

Catelyn Tully finds him hard and sour, and Lothar Frey puts his roughness down to the manner of a soldier. He is a misanthropic knight of cold courtesy, resentful of his bastard birth. He is married to a lady of House Charlton, with whom he has two children, Walda and Aemon Rivers.

When Chett was seized near Seven Streams over a killing, the Twins sent Walder to see to his trial. The matter ended with Chett bound for the Wall, escorted by Yoren.

Walder took command of the forty men who escorted Lothar Frey south to Riverrun, where his brother was to treat with King Robb Stark. At dinner with Robb, Lord Edmure and Catelyn Tully, he came across as cold and curt.

He again rode with Lothar when the latter met Robb outside the gates of the Twins, and there he showed himself far less friendly than his half-brother. When the Red Wedding came, it was Walder who led the attack on the soldiers' camp.

During the siege of Riverrun, Walder kept a modest tent and found himself caught up in the tense deadlock dividing the besieging command. He went so far as to challenge Lord Clement Piper after the latter insulted his nephew Edwyn Frey, and only Ser Jaime Lannister's intervention kept them from fighting.

After Edmure arranged Riverrun's surrender, Walder told Jaime that Edwyn's father, Ser Ryman Frey, had been hanged by outlaws near Oldstones. Edwyn suspected his own brother was behind it, but Walder pointed out there was no proof of that. He also told Jaime that Ser Raynald Westerling was presumed dead because of the Red Wedding.
