Sarella Sand
On this tab
Sarella Sand is one of the bastard daughters of Prince Oberyn Martell, born of his relationship with the Summer Islander captain of the Feathered Kiss. She is one of the Sand Snakes, though of a different temperament from her sisters, drawn more to books, ruins and maps than to the spear.
Her hunger to learn everything about old places and old peoples marks her, among her sisters, as the one who looks at the world through different eyes.
Origins
Birth and Parentage
Sarella was born in 281 AC, the bastard daughter of Oberyn Martell and the Summer Islander captain of the Feathered Kiss, a trader who did business with Dorne. That blood made her half Summer Islander and half Dornish, and semi-canonical sources give her the brown skin of that mixed heritage.
Like the rest of her father's daughters, she was trained by him to defend herself; Oberyn made sure none of his bastard daughters was left defenseless.

Childhood in Dorne
As a girl she sometimes played with her cousin Arianne Martell at the Water Gardens, though the princess's affection leaned more toward Tyene Sand.
Sarella was the sort who went where she wasn't supposed to: once she went with her father, Tyene, and Arianne to the ruins of Ghaston Grey, and there she did more than look. She cleared rocks and sand off the mosaics, determined to find out who had once lived there. That same curiosity would in time draw her to Oldtown.

Departure from Dorne
When Prince Doran ordered the arrest of all the Sand Snakes, Sarella was no longer in Dorne. He said he would pray she had more sense than her sisters, and told Areo Hotah to let her "play her game."
