Selwyn Tarth

Selwyn had four children, but only one of them reached adulthood. His son Galladon drowned as a boy, and two daughters, Alysanne and Arianne, died in their cradles; Brienne was the only one left, and with her Tarth was left with an heir rather than the son the house had expected.

Brienne would later remember that her father never kept the same woman for more than a year at a time, and that he always kept a musician on retainer at the castle; because of that she ended up learning everything the man played by heart.

As the war spread across the realm, Ser Davos Seaworth traveled through the Stormlands seeking support for Stannis Baratheon's cause. Selwyn Tarth did not receive him at his castle: he granted him a meeting at midnight, inside a cave, a gesture that already hinted at the answer.

There he made it plain to Davos that the island of Tarth would not join that war on his side.

Later, on learning that Brienne had been taken captive by Roose Bolton and the sellswords under his command, and that they were demanding a ransom for her, Selwyn sent back a raven of his own: he offered three hundred gold dragons to get her back safe and sound.

The leader of those sellswords distrusted the offer, convinced that the lord of Tarth was hiding his true sapphires and merely trying to trick him.
