Honeywine

Aguamiel

The Honeywine is the river that cuts through the Reach from the lands around Aguasclaras and Sotomiel down to Oldtown, where it empties into the Whispering Sound.

House Hightower has held its banks for generations, and its waters later saw one of the battles of the Dance of the Dragons.

Chapter 1

The river's course

Books only

The Honeywine flows down from the fields around Aguasclaras and Sotomiel, in the heart of the Reach, and empties into the Whispering Sound by Oldtown. Near the city itself, a small island in the middle of the channel holds an inn, El Cálamo y el Pichel, a customary stop for anyone sailing toward the river mouth.

Chapter 2

The pirate lord and the Hightowers

Books only

People settled near the river's mouth in times so old they blur into the Dawn Age. During the Age of Heroes a pirate lord ruled its waters from an island in the channel, collecting his toll by raiding every ship that came downriver. Over the centuries those lands passed into the hands of House Hightower, who have held them since the days of King Uthor of the High Tower.

Chapter 3

The Battle of the Honeywine

130 ACBooks only

In the year 130, in the middle of the Dance of the Dragons, the Honeywine became the site of a clash between Lord Ormund Hightower's forces and the Reach lords who had thrown in with Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. The fight turned when Prince Daeron arrived astride his dragon Tessarion and shifted the balance of the battle.
