Uthor of the High Tower

Uthor del Faro

Uthor of the High Tower was the first king of House Hightower and the man who raised, in stone, the tower that gave his line its name.

His marriage to Maris the Maid and the building of that stronghold laid the ground for the lordship his descendants would hold over Oldtown and the Honeywine.

Chapter 1

The maid who slipped past Argoth

Books only

Maris, one of the daughters of Garth Greenhand, was said to be the most beautiful woman of her age. When the first tournament recorded in Westeros was held, fifty lords entered to compete for her hand.

The winner of that contest was Argoth Pieldura, known as the Grey Giant. But before he could claim his prize, Maris had already married Uthor of the High Tower. Argoth never accepted it: he stayed near Oldtown for the rest of his life, still laying claim to the bride he never had.

Chapter 2

The tower of stone

Books only

Uthor is said to have ordered a new Hightower built, the fifth raised on that headland, but the first made entirely of stone. Legend credits the work to Brandon Stark the Builder, or perhaps to a son of his who shared the name.

That tower turned his line into more than a name: with it, House Hightower was founded as a noble house, and Uthor's sons, Urrigon and Peremore, inherited a domain their descendants would hold for generations as kings of Oldtown and the Honeywine lands.
