Mander

Not to be confused with Mander (river).
The Mander is the longest and mightiest river of the Reach, and it gives its name to the house that once lived on its banks, House Manderly. It rises in the western highlands and empties across from the Islas Escudo, after crossing some of the wealthiest lordships in the region.
Ironborn raiders have rowed up its channel after plunder, and whole armies have followed its course after a crown. Towns such as Puenteamargo, Granmesa, and Altojardín owe much of their wealth to the river, and lords of the Reach have fought over its control for centuries.
Chapter 1
A river with two faces

Slow-flowing, the Mander carries sandbanks and fords that can trap a careless boat. It takes in the waters of the Fuegoazul and the Río de los Mejillones, and along its course it waters Ladera, Puenteamargo, Granmesa, La Sidra, and Altojardín.
In its upper reaches it runs brown and swift, but by the time it reaches Altojardín its waters turn clear and calm, almost a different river from the one that rises further west.
Chapter 2
Guarded waters

For generations, ironborn raiders rowed up the Mander as far as Puenteamargo to plunder its banks. The kings of House Gardener answered by fortifying and settling the Islas Escudo at the river's mouth, to close the way in and give warning before any raid could land.
A thousand years earlier, House Manderly held its lands along the river that still bears its name, until the Gardener kings drove them out.
Chapter 3
The headwaters Argilac would not give up

Shortly before the war broke out, Aegon Targaryen answered the peace Argilac Durrandon offered him with a far harder demand: he wanted the Garfio de Massey and all the woodland between the Aguastortas and the Aguasnegras, the headwaters of the Mander included. Argilac turned it down.
When House Gardener fell, the title of Lord Paramount of the Mander passed to Lord Harlen Tyrell. After the Battle of Puente de Piedra, the river's waters ran red with blood for twenty leagues.
