Mander
el Mander
Not to be confused with Mander (river).
The Mander is the longest and mightiest river of the Reach, and it takes its name from the house that once dwelt along its banks. It rises in the woodlands of the interior and empties into the sea by the Shield Islands, crossing lands that changed hands with every war fought over the Iron Throne.
Chapter 1
Swift waters, slow waters
Books only
The Mander starts out turbulent: in its upper reaches it runs brown and fast, with treacherous fords and sandbars that have sunk more than one careless vessel. It takes in the waters of the Mussel River before its character begins to soften.
Near Highgarden it changes entirely and turns clear and slow-flowing. On its way to the sea it also passes Grassfield, Bitterbridge, Grand Chester and Cider Hall.
Chapter 2
The sentinels of the river mouth
Books only
For a long time the ironborn would raid up the Mander, reaching as far as Bitterbridge. To stop them, the Gardener kings of the Reach built fortifications and settled the Shield Islands, at the river's mouth, tasked with guarding the entrance and giving warning when raiders came.
House Manderly itself once lived along the banks of the Mander, until the Gardeners drove them from those lands.
Chapter 3
The river the conqueror wanted
Books only
Shortly before the war that would win him the throne, Aegon Targaryen rejected the peace offered by Argilac Durrandon and answered with a greater demand: the cession of Massey's Hook and all the lands between the Blackwater Rush and the Wendwater, including the very headwaters of the Mander. Argilac refused.
With the fall of House Gardener, it was Lord Harlen Tyrell who received the title of Lord Paramount of the Mander. Later, after the Battle of the Stonebridge, the river ran red for twenty leagues.

The position was inferred from the label on the base map rather than from a symbol of its own: it marks the area, not the point.
