Old Ghis was the capital of an empire that dominated eastern Essos before Valyria rose to power. Today it is nothing but ruins beside the Summer Sea, and its fall marks one of the earliest great triumphs of the Valyrian dragons.
Chapter 1
The Ghiscari capital

Grazdan the Great founded it and made it the center of an empire that, according to some sources, was one of the great powers of the east during the Age of Heroes. It stood on the shores of the Summer Sea, facing Valyria across the Gulf of Grief.
Chapter 2
Ashes and salt
Books only
Five thousand years ago, while Valyria was still young, its dragons burned the city to ash. Afterward its lands were sown with salt, so that no survivor could return. What remains today is ruin.
