Rhoyne

The Rhoyne is the great river of eastern Essos, a sacred waterway to the Rhoynar people and a route almost anyone crossing the continent has to reckon with.
It rises from the joining of two lesser streams and ends in a vast delta, where the Free City of Volantis stands.
Chapter 1
A river built from tributaries

It begins southeast of the ruins of Ghoyan Drohe, where two lesser streams meet — the ones marked on maps as the Upper Rhoyne and the Little Rhoyne. From there it runs south and east, growing stronger as it goes.
Along the way other waters join it, among them the Qhoyne, the Noyne and the Lhorulu, each carrying its own name among the Rhoynar. Its lower stretches are known ground for river pirates, and it finally opens into a huge delta with Volantis built upon it.

Mother Rhoyne

For the Rhoynar, whose ancestral homeland this was, the river is more than water to sail on: their faith treats it as something close to a god, and gives it a name of its own, Mother Rhoyne.
