Archibald Yronwood

Archibald Yronwood is the nephew of Lord Anders Yronwood, head of House Yronwood. As a boy he lost his hair to an illness, and has been bald ever since.

His size sets him apart: six feet tall, broad-shouldered, thick-bellied, with legs like tree trunks and hands the size of hams. His arms rival the girth of Strong Belwas's. He carries a spiked mace and a short dagger, and wears fine armor; of the three companions, he is the best fighter. He likes to gamble at dice, gets seasick easily, and can never remember Ghiscari names.

Prince Doran Martell tells his daughter Arianne that he has arranged an escort for his son Quentyn: alongside Ser Archibald, Ser Cletus Yronwood, Maester Kedry, Ser Gerris Drinkwater and Ser Willam Wells will travel with him to Meereen, in search of Daenerys Targaryen.

Off the coast of the Disputed Lands, corsairs ambush the Dornishmen's ship; Cletus, Kedry and Willam are killed in the attack, and only Archibald, Quentyn and Gerris reach Volantis alive. There they fail to hire a ship bound for Meereen. Archibald suggests taking the demon road, but Gerris's plan wins out instead: joining the sellsword company known as the Windblown.

Among the sellswords he hides his name behind the alias Greenguts, earned after spending most of the voyage seasick and ill. When the group decides to leave the Windblown, the Tattered Prince recruits them into a Westerosi company tasked with faking a betrayal before switching sides to Daenerys.

In Meereen, Daenerys Targaryen receives Quentyn and Gerris. The prince explains why he has come: to ask for her hand. The queen, already promised to Hizdahr zo Loraq, turns down the offer and advises the Dornishmen to go home. They choose to stay anyway.

Archibald helps Quentyn in his attempt to tame the dragons, though he and Gerris are at first wary of so risky a plan.

Rhaegal burns Quentyn mortally; Archibald tries to smother the flames with his bare hands and fails. Both he and Gerris are arrested for treason. Neither resists — grief at what has happened outweighs whatever fear they have of what comes next.

Ser Barristan Selmy comes to the Dornishmen's cell and tells them they are to hang for treason and for the deaths of four of the queen's guardsmen. Archibald admits he killed only one, though he suspects Hizdahr zo Loraq, the newly crowned king, will not care about the difference. When Gerris blames Archibald for everything that has happened, Archibald calms him down and tells Barristan exactly what happened when they tried to capture the dragons, and what plan Quentyn had made with the Tattered Prince.

The old knight offers them a ship to carry Quentyn's body back to Dorne, in exchange for a message they must carry to the Windblown: that their captain will be given Pentos if he helps free the Meereenese prisoners held in Yunkai. Gerris refuses, but Archibald accepts the bargain and talks him into it.
