Edric Dayne

Edric Dayne, known to everyone as Ned, is the young Lord of Starfall and head of House Dayne. At just seven years old he entered the service of Lord Beric Dondarrion as a page, and that bond would carry him far from Dorne, into the heart of the War of the Five Kings.

He served as squire to Lord Beric in the Brotherhood without Banners, the band of outlaws that fought for the smallfolk of the Riverlands during the war, and during that time he crossed paths with Arya Stark, whom he accompanied for part of her flight.

Childhood at Starfall

287–297 ACBooks only

Edric was born at Starfall in 287 AC, the only son of Lord Dayne. He is a nephew of Arthur Dayne, the legendary knight known as the Sword of the Morning, and of his sisters Ashara and Allyria.

When he was seven, his aunt Allyria's betrothal to Lord Beric Dondarrion changed his life: his father sent him to Blackhaven to serve as page to her husband-to-be. At ten, Beric named him his squire. In a riding competition, the boy once won a prize.

Chapter 2

The Tourney of the Hand and the ambush

Books only

In King's Landing, Edric attended the Tourney of the Hand held in honor of Eddard Stark, the new Hand of King Robert Baratheon. He wanted to approach and speak with him but didn't know what to say. He also noticed Sansa Stark, Eddard's daughter, the day Ser Loras Tyrell gave her a rose.

As Beric Dondarrion's squire, he was part of the force Eddard Stark sent into the Riverlands to capture Ser Gregor Clegane. The group was ambushed at the Mummer's Ford, and Edric pulled a dying Beric from the river, staying by his body while the battle raged around them.

Chapter 3

The outlaws of the Riverlands

Books only

In this chapterSandor Clegane

After Robert Baratheon's death the War of the Five Kings broke out, and the Brotherhood without Banners, the band of outlaws Lord Beric led, turned to protecting the smallfolk of the Riverlands. Edric stayed at his side as squire.

He brought Beric his sword, surcoat, and shield before Beric fought Sandor Clegane in a trial by combat. When Beric died in the duel, Thoros of Myr asked Edric to help with the body before bringing him back to life. Edric fought beside Beric at the Battle of the Sept, and travelled with the outlaws to High Heart, where a night of rain left him shivering with cold.

Chapter 4

Jon Snow's milk-brother

Books only

When the Brotherhood brought Arya Stark to Hollow Hill, it was Edric who helped Beric out of his breastplate, and the name everyone called him, Ned, made Arya uneasy — it was her own father's nickname. Edric tried to befriend her during their travels, to Gendry's annoyance, and little by little he told her things: that he had seen her father and her sister Sansa at the Tourney of the Hand, and that he and Jon Snow, Arya's half-brother, were milk-brothers, since his wet nurse Wylla, a servant of House Dayne for many years, was supposed to be Jon's mother. He swore it on his house's honor.

He also told her about his family: that his aunt Allyria had told him Ashara Dayne and Eddard Stark had fallen in love at the Tourney of Harrenhal, and that Ashara had taken her own life. Arya was upset to learn her father might have loved another woman besides her mother, and pulled away from him, unwilling to hear more.

After Beric's final death, Edric parted ways with the Brotherhood, while others in the band chose to follow Lady Stoneheart.
