House Wyl of the Boneway

Casa Wyl del Camino Pedregoso

House Wyl of the Boneway is one of the great noble houses of Dorne, sworn to House Martell and lord of Wyl, its banner a black adder sinking its fangs into a heel on a field of yellow.

Its history is that of a border it has never stopped watching: for generations it has clashed with the lords of the Dornish Marches, and beneath its castle run tunnels built for holding out rather than for attack.

Chapter 1

Guardians of the stony north

Books only

For as long as anyone can say, the Wyls have fought one enduring war: against the lords of the Dornish Marches to their north. Each generation inherited that border like a debt passed down.

Beneath the castle of Wyl runs a network of tunnels leading into nearby caverns, built so the house could hold out under siege without ever setting foot in open ground.

Chapter 2

Defeat at the Bloody Pool

The maiden Wylla of Wyl joined forces with Yoren Yronwood to stand against King Durran Durrandon the Young, but the clash at the Bloody Pool went badly for them: beaten on the field, they were sent back to their own lands.

Victory at the Boneway

During the First Dornish War, the Wyl of Wyl then in power turned his house's fortunes around: his men beat back Orys Baratheon's forces at the Assault of the Boneway, one of the few clear setbacks the invading army suffered in that campaign.

Chapter 4

Walter Wyl and the Vulture King

The son of that Wyl of Wyl, Walter Wyl, kept up the family habit of making war on the Crown: he fought alongside the Vulture King during the reign of Aenys I Targaryen.

Centuries later, the Wyls' black adder was still a recognizable emblem in Westeros: it flew among the banners of the knights gathered at the Tourney of the Hand.
