Ambush on the Boneway

Asalto del Sendahuesos

The Ambush on the Boneway was a Dornish trap sprung against Orys Baratheon's forces during the First Dornish War, in the pass that cuts through the Red Mountains. The defeat cost Orys his sword hand and left him a captive for years.

Chapter 1

The night ambush

4 ACBooks only

With the rest of Westeros already subdued, Aegon I set out to bring Dorne to heel as well. He put one of his columns under the command of his Hand, Orys Baratheon, tasked with forcing the Boneway through the Red Mountains.

The Dornish waited for nightfall. From the heights above the pass they rained stones, arrows and spears down on the column, and the soldiers trapped below had no way to strike back.

Lord Wyl of Wyl, known as the Widow's Lover, sealed off both ends of the pass. Orys was trapped along with a good many of his knights and bannermen, and all of them were taken prisoner.

Chapter 2

The severed hand

4–7 ACBooks only

Orys had his sword hand cut off. He remained a prisoner for several years, until in the year 4 AC he was ransomed for his weight in gold.

Revenge came decades later, during the Vulture Hunt, when Orys faced Walter Wyl, son of the Lord Wyl who had captured him.
