Bay of Crabs

la bahía de los Cangrejos

The Bay of Crabs opens along Westeros's eastern coast, between the lowlands around Maidenpool and the northern cliffs where Gulltown and Sisterton stand. The Trident, the great river that crosses the Riverlands, empties into it, and its horizon is bounded by Cape Wrath and the Mountains of the Moon.

Its low, lonely southwestern shores have long served as paths of flight and search for those crossing this stretch of the realm, and its waters hold stories reaching back to when House Durrandon ruled these lands.

Chapter 1

Marshes, reeds and salt pans

Books and show

The bay's water washes two very different shores. To the southwest, under the rule of House Mooton, lies flat, damp country: dunes of sand, saltpans and reed-beds that a narrow path barely follows, sinking often into pools left by the tides. Trees are scarce there, and the people who live on that land do so in solitary houses of reed and mud, among terns, sandpipers, foxes, frogs and crickets.

The far shore has a different character: Maidenpool stands on the southern coast, and further north, on the cape open to the Narrow Sea, sit Gulltown and Sisterton. There the Trident delivers the waters it has gathered on its course through the Riverlands, and the bay is framed by Cape Wrath to the southeast and the Mountains of the Moon to the northwest.

Chapter 2

The border Harren broke

Books only

For centuries the Storm Kings of House Durrandon held sway from these shores as far as Cape Wrath, ruling the lands that lie between them. That rule ended when the ironmen, led by Harren the Black, drove them out of every territory north of the Blackwater.

Chapter 3

Nettles' flight

Books only

During the Dance of the Dragons, Nettles managed to escape Maidenpool. The last anyone saw of her, she was flying over the Bay of Crabs on Sheepstealer's back, wrapped in the morning mist.

Chapter 4

The search along the coast

Books only

Searching for Sansa Stark, Brienne Tarth and her travelling companions followed the southwestern coast of the Bay of Crabs, making for the Quiet Isle in hopes of news of her.
