Saltpans
Salinas
Saltpans is a small port town at the mouth of the Trident, on the Bay of Crabs in the Riverlands. A modest castle — a square keep with a courtyard and stone outer walls — watches over the town and its wharf, where merchant ships often dock. It is held by Houses Hawick and Cox.
Because of its position on the coast, the town is a common stop for anyone traveling north or looking to sail for Essos, and, during the war, it will become the setting of one of its cruelest episodes.
Chapter 1
The charters that never came
Books only
The old river kings were not generous with charters: they refused to let several riverside towns expand, Buenabasto and Saltpans among them, places that with that license might have grown into true cities.
The refusal left its mark on the size of both: centuries later, they remain little more than waypoints.
Chapter 2
The harbor left standing
Books only
After the attack at the Inn at the Crossroads, Sandor Clegane and Arya Stark head for Saltpans looking for shelter or passage. When they arrive they find the town in ruins, though the harbor is still working.
It is from that harbor that Arya, having parted ways with Sandor, boards the Titan's Daughter bound for Braavos.
Chapter 3
Ashes and survivors
Books only
Word of the sack reaches the Twins, and Ser Arwood Frey is sent from there with a small party to investigate. What they find is a city burned to ash and a handful of survivors: fishermen who had been out on their boats during the slaughter, and the knight of Saltpans, who had held out shut inside the castle with his family.
Among the crimes committed are rapes, including that of a twelve-year-old girl. The attack is blamed on Sandor Clegane, though it is actually led by Rorge, who passes himself off as the Hound by wearing his helm, at the head of a band drawn from the Brave Companions.
