Fairmarket

The old Kings of the Rivers refused to grant the charters that would have let towns like Lord Harroway's Town, Saltpans, or Fairmarket grow. None of the three ever became a city.

When the region fell to the Storm Kings of House Durrandon, a peasant named Pate declared himself king of Fairmarket. No one recognized him, and the title brought him nothing.

Fairmarket was the site of a decisive clash between the Storm King Arrec Durrandon and Harwyn Hoare, King of the Iron Islands. Arrec brought more men, but several river lords, Lothar Bracken among them, sided with Harwyn, and that tipped the battle.

With the victory secured, Harwyn's son Halleck raised a modest tower in the town as the seat of his reign. His own son Harren found it too small for his ambitions and chose to build Harrenhal elsewhere instead.

When the Dance of the Dragons ended, northmen who had marched south to fight found themselves stranded far from home. Many no longer had anywhere to return to.

In Fairmarket, early in the reign of Aegon III, one of the so-called Widows' Fairs was held: widows from the town married those northmen, and several of the men stayed on to live there.

In 155 AC, Prince Aegon Targaryen was passing through Fairmarket when his horse threw a shoe and he was forced to stop.

There he met Megette, who became one of his lovers.

During the War of the Five Kings, Robb Stark sent scouts to Fairmarket to see whether his army could cross the Blue Fork there.

They found the bridge destroyed, and that crossing was ruled out.

Lord Lucias Vypren tracked a band that might have been tied to the murder of Merrett Frey, of House Frey, as far as Fairmarket, but lost the trail there.

Not far from that same stretch, two leagues south of the town, Ser Ryman Frey and the men riding with him were ambushed and killed.
