Great Wyk
Gran Wyk
Great Wyk is the largest of the Iron Islands, the only one where fortresses have been raised far from the sea.
Ironborn live on it, and houses such as Goodbrother, Merlyn, Sparr and Farwynd hold their seats there.
Chapter 1
The greatest of the Iron Islands
Books only
Great Wyk rises in the Iron Bay and is larger than every other island in the archipelago. That size allows for something the rest of the isles lack: castles raised inland, away from the surf.
Ironborn live across its lands, split among several houses. Hammerhorn holds the main line of House Goodbrother, with cadet branches at Corpse Lake, Crow's Nest Keep and the Pit. Pebble belongs to the Merlyns, and Sealskin Point to a branch of the Farwynds.
Chapter 2
The first sept and the fall of the Hoares
Books only
During Wulfgar Hoare's reign, the first sept in the Iron Islands was raised on Great Wyk.
Hoare Castle, his house's seat on the island, did not outlast King Hagon Hoare's defeat: Ser Aubrey Crakehall razed it after beating him.
Chapter 3
Aegon's dragon and Stannis's yoke
Books only
Once the War of Conquest ended, Aegon I Targaryen landed on Great Wyk on Balerion's back, set on breaking the island's lords who still styled themselves Kings of the Iron Islands.
Generations later, during the Greyjoy Rebellion, Stannis Baratheon subdued the island once more.

PositionWe worked it out
The position was inferred from the label on the base map rather than from a symbol of its own: it marks the area, not the point.
