Old Wyk

Ironborn tradition places the origin of their faith on this island: on its shores the Grey King slew the sea dragon Nagga, and among its bones the First Men found the Seastone Chair, the throne that would pass down through the islands' rulers for centuries. That is why Old Wyk became the fixed setting for the kingsmoots, held for millennia in the hall raised from Nagga's own ribs. The earliest crowning the island's memory keeps is that of Urras Greyiron, anointed by Galon Whitestaff.

When Urras died, his son Erich Greyiron tried to take the crown without calling a kingsmoot; Galon Whitestaff's opposition forced him to give it up, and the assembly chose Regnar Drumm instead, until then Rock King of the island itself. Old Wyk also produced Ralf the Limper, a raider famed among his own people, and the island's longships served King Harrag Hoare when he carried war into Theon Stark's North.

The kingsmoots ended the day Urron Greyiron summoned his rivals to Old Wyk and cut them down among Nagga's bones; from then on the old Rock Kings and Salt Kings of Old Wyk lost their crowns and became vassals of an already hereditary line. Generations later, when King Horgan Hoare allowed a sept to be built on the island, the priests of the Drowned God burned it, killed the septon who served there, and drowned the faithful gathered inside; the king answered by killing those priests, earning the name Kingsbreaker.

When the War of the Conquest ended and Aegon Targaryen took the Iron Throne as king of the Seven Kingdoms, a priest from Old Wyk named Lodos rose briefly against him before giving way.

Years later the death of the Red Kraken, Lord Dalton Greyjoy, left the succession open, and the island became a battleground between his would-be heirs, made worse by Ser Leo Costayne's invasion.

Much later, during the Greyjoy Rebellion, it was Ser Barristan Selmy who led the crown's attack on Old Wyk.

Deep into the War of the Five Kings, Balon Greyjoy sent Dagmer Cleftjaw to Old Wyk to strip Houses Stonehouse and Drumm of whatever men and supplies they could give.

After Balon's death, the captains and kings of the Iron Islands gathered again on Nagga's Hill to choose his successor, following the island's old custom. Euron Greyjoy emerged from that kingsmoot crowned the new King of the Iron Islands.
