Lorath Bay
la bahía de Lorath
Lorath Bay opens along the northwestern coast of Essos, between the Hills of Norvos and the Shivering Sea. At its mouth, on an island, sits the free city of Lorath, while the western shore belongs to Braavos.
Its cold waters hold seals, walruses and the occasional leviathan, and both Braavosi fishing fleets and Ibbenese whalers and sealers work them freely, since the Lorathi who claim the bay lack the strength to keep anyone out.
Chapter 1
A bay nobody fully controls
Books only
The Lorathi claim the bay as their own, but they have neither the ships nor the men to enforce it. Braavosi fishing vessels move through its waters as if the coast were theirs, joined by the harpoons of Ibbenese whalers and sealers. The western shore, in fact, already belongs to Braavos rather than Lorath.
Beneath the surface live seals, walruses and the odd leviathan, a sign that these waters remain open hunting ground rather than a watched border.
Chapter 2
The Bloody Flux of Lorath
Books only
Long before the free city existed, the shores and islands of the bay had other inhabitants: first the maze-makers and the hairy men, and later the Andals. Of the Andals nothing remained, wiped out in what became known as the Bloody Flux of Lorath.
After that slaughter, the region fell under the Valyrian Freehold, which colonized it and left Lorath as one of its settlements on this stretch of the Essos coast.
