Stoney Sept

During the war that led Aegon Targaryen to unite the Seven Kingdoms, Stoney Sept served as a meeting point. After Harrenhal burned under his dragons' fire, Aegon gathered there again with his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys to plan the final blow against the kings still holding out: the clash that would follow at the Field of Fire.

With remnants of the Warrior's Sons still holding out in towns like Stoney Sept, Lannisport, Oldtown and Gulltown, King Maegor I Targaryen put an end to the order by fire, burning the Sept of Remembrance with many of its knights still inside.

In 47 AC, Septon Luna spoke out publicly against the king's plan to take three more wives.

In 53 AC, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen passed through Stoney Sept on a journey through the Riverlands. Lady Jennis Templeton travelled with him to hold audiences for the women of the realm, and it was during one such audience, held in the town itself, that word reached him that Queen Alysanne had just given him a first daughter.

The king mounted his dragon Vermithor at once and flew straight back to the capital.

In the early years of Aegon III Targaryen's reign, Stoney Sept held one of the so-called Widows' Fairs: women of the town who had lost their husbands married northmen who had come south during the Dance of the Dragons and chosen not to go home.

Septon Eustace had been born in Stoney Sept. He returned to the town in 131 AC, after the Hand of the King had him removed from court, and there, in retirement, wrote his account of Viserys I's reign and of the civil war that followed it, the Dance of the Dragons.

In 283 AC, Stoney Sept was the site of a decisive clash in Robert's Rebellion. Robert Baratheon, joined by Eddard Stark, Jon Arryn and Hoster Tully, met the royalist army there under Jon Connington, Hand to King Aerys II Targaryen, and broke it.

The town paid a heavy price during the War of the Five Kings. Ser Wilbert, one of its knights, was killed by Lannister forces, and his sons rode off afterward with Robb Stark toward the westerlands.

By the time word spread of the famine gripping the area, the town gates had already been torn down and rebuilt once, and a third of its houses stood empty, burned out in some earlier assault. The market square, with its leaping-trout fountain and the iron cages once used to hold prisoners, bore witness to that misery, while nearby the brothel known as the Peach kept doing business under its half-bitten wooden sign.
