Denys Arryn

Ser Denys Arryn was a knight from a landless, moneyless line of House Arryn who, through marriage and the deaths of other kinsmen, ended up as the heir of Lord Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie.

He served as Warden of the Bloody Gate and was one of the Arryn knights who took up arms when King Aerys II Targaryen turned against his own vassals.

In this chapterAerys II Targaryen

Denys Arryn belonged to a branch of the Arryns with no lands or wealth of its own. His fortunes changed when he married a distant cousin, granddaughter of Lord Jasper Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie, through his daughter Alys and Elys Waynwood. That marriage, together with his name, placed him in the House's line of succession, just behind Elbert Arryn.

Lord Jon named him to the post after the death of the man who had held it, his own brother, Ser Ronnel Arryn. He was remembered as a renowned jouster, well made, gallant, and courteous.

Everything changed when King Aerys II Targaryen had Elbert Arryn killed. With no direct heir left, Lord Jon named Denys in his place.
