Aenys Blackfyre

Aenys Fuegoscuro

Aenys Blackfyre was the fifth son of Daemon Blackfyre and Rohanne of Tyrosh, born into the exile his father's defeat had condemned the family to. When King Maekar I Targaryen died without a clear heir, Aenys saw his chance to press his family's claim to the Iron Throne and wrote from beyond Westeros to make it known.

Chapter 1

The pretender's fifth son

191 ACBooks only

Aenys was born to Daemon Blackfyre and Rohanne of Tyrosh, the fifth of the couple's children, at some point during the exile the family had lived under since the defeat of the rebellion against the Targaryens. Nothing else is recorded of his childhood or his early years away from Westeros.

Chapter 2

The head at the Great Council

233 ACBooks only

When Maekar I Targaryen died in 233 AC without an undisputed heir, Brynden Rivers, the King's Hand, called a Great Council to settle the succession. Aenys used the opening to press his claim to the Iron Throne by letter, and the Hand answered by inviting him to King's Landing under promise of safe conduct.

Aenys accepted, and the mistake cost him his life: no sooner had he set foot in the city than the gold cloaks seized him and dragged him to the Red Keep, where he was beheaded. His head was presented to the lords gathered at the Great Council, a warning to anyone who still held loyalty to the Blackfyres.

When Aegon V Targaryen later took the throne, he had Bloodraven arrested for that killing, and Bloodraven ended up leaving for the Wall.
