House Blackfyre of King's Landing

Daemon was born a bastard of Aegon IV and Daena Targaryen, and was legitimized by his father. At fourteen he received from the king's own hand the Valyrian steel sword that had belonged to Aegon the Conqueror and to every one of his successors. With it he also took a name for his house and a sigil of his own: the Targaryen three-headed dragon, but with the colors of sable and gules swapped.

From their Targaryen blood the Blackfyres inherited pale gold hair, violet eyes and, it was said, the gift of dreaming things that had not yet happened.

In 195 AC Daemon claimed the throne for himself against his half-brother Daeron II. He leaned on an old rumor, that Daeron was not the son of Aegon IV but of Aemon Targaryen, the Dragonknight, and held up the gift of the sword as proof that his father had meant him to succeed.

The rebellion was settled at the Battle of the Redgrass Field. Daemon fell there along with his two eldest sons, and the cause was left without a head.

The sons who survived were exiled to the Free Cities together with part of their followers. There, under Aegor Rivers, they raised the Golden Company so the claim would not die out. Aegor married Calha, daughter of the dead pretender, and from then on was the man who in practice led the Blackfyres through exile.

In 212 AC Daemon's third son took up the cause on his own, this time without Aegor Rivers, who doubted the plan. Lord Bloodraven uncovered the plot before it came to anything and had the pretender arrested; he spent the rest of his life a prisoner at court.

In 219 AC, with Aegor Rivers now at his side, Haegon Blackfyre landed in Westeros. The troops loyal to the throne beat him without much doubt.

Haegon was killed after surrendering. Aegor was captured and sentenced to take the black at the Wall, but escaped before serving it.

In 233 AC, after King Maekar died without a clear heir, Aenys, Daemon's last son, tried a path different from his brothers': asking for the throne by peaceful means. He was promised he would come to no harm if he presented himself in King's Landing. He did, and Bloodraven had him beheaded.

In 236, Aegor Rivers tried once more, this time alongside Haegon's son, Daemon. The years had left the cause with little support, and the rebellion collapsed with the pretender's death. Aegor returned to exile and died not long after.

In 260 AC Maelys Blackfyre, called the Monstrous, talked his partners in the Band of Nine into bringing the War of the Ninepenny Kings to the shores of Westeros.

The Iron Throne, which had left them to their own devices until then, sent troops to the islands. After hard fighting, the coalition fell. Maelys died in single combat against Barristan Selmy, and with him the male line of House Blackfyre went out. Nothing more was ever heard of the female line.
