Alysane Mormont

Alysane is born on Bear Island around the year 276, a date the source does not fix with certainty. She is the second daughter of Maege Mormont, and in time becomes heir to House Mormont after the death of her older sister, Dacey.

She is short and stocky, with thick thighs and big hands, her palms hard with calluses; her teeth are crooked, but that does nothing to spoil a smile people find charming. She is said to snore worse than any man, and has a reputation for fierceness. She has never married, though she has two small children, a girl and a boy, and claims a bear fathered both of them, since she herself is a skinchanger. Of her island she says: "We are what you made us. On Bear Island, the children learn early to fear the krakens that come from the sea."

Now grown, Alysane leads House Mormont's men-at-arms against the ironborn holding Deepwood Motte. The attack comes hidden among a fleet of fishing boats, and catches the defenders completely off guard.

Alysane burns and captures every ship anchored there, and takes several captains, warriors and highborn men prisoner, to be held for ransom.

Stannis Baratheon takes Deepwood Motte and restores it to House Glover; in exchange, House Mormont swears him its loyalty. Alysane joins his army when it marches on Winterfell, though her alliance with him is not always smooth — more than once she manages to try his patience. Later she is put in charge of guarding Asha Greyjoy, Stannis's prisoner.

Camped in a village near the Wolfswood, west of Winterfell, Alysane and Asha spend several days fishing the frozen lakes, with little luck. When Clayton Suggs wants to burn Asha as an offering to R'hllor, it is Alysane who protects her.
