The Wolfswood

Before the Starks ruled the North, the Blackwoods held much of this land, until the Kings of Winter themselves drove them out during the Age of Heroes; the Blackwoods then settled at Raventree Hall, where they ruled until the Andals came. The Glovers of Deepwood Motte were also kings in that age, but ended up as vassals of Winterfell.

Harrag Hoare, lord of the Iron Islands, once burned part of the wood to ash.

Generations later, the Starks still hunted boar among its trees, and Jory Cassel once took Robb, Bran and Jon fishing for trout in a stream near Winterfell.

Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister ride through the eastern stretch of the wood along the Kingsroad, bound for Castle Black. Near the edge of the trees they come across Yoren, sheltering there with his party.

Back at Winterfell, Bran Stark takes his first ride since his fall and is attacked in the wood by a band of wildlings and Night's Watch deserters.

Word that the ironborn threaten Torrhen's Square sends Maester Luwin's ravens out to White Harbor, to the Barrowlands, and into the deepest parts of the wood, calling the levies to arms. It does little good: the ironborn take Deepwood Motte and then Winterfell itself.

When Bran vanishes from Winterfell with Osha, Hodor and the Reed siblings, Theon Greyjoy tracks them northwest into the forest, past treacherous ravines, stony hills, an abandoned farmhouse and a flooded quarry. He finds nothing: the fugitives are hiding in the crypts of Winterfell.

After the sack of Winterfell, Bran and his companions — Summer, Meera, Jojen, Osha and Hodor — find shelter in a crumbling tower deep in the wood. There Bran decides to press on north, beyond the Wall, in search of the three-eyed crow.

Wearing Summer's skin, Bran comes to think of himself as prince of the greenwood, prince of that forest.

At Deepwood Motte, with the castle retaken, Asha Greyjoy finds she cannot even make out the Bay of Ice, barely five leagues off, so thick is the wood around her.

Smallfolk from the innermost reaches of the wood join Stannis Baratheon's army as it marches on Winterfell to face Roose Bolton's forces. A snowstorm slows the advance and forces Stannis's men to camp in a village in the eastern wood.
