Elinor Costayne

Elinor Costayne was one of three women King Maegor I Targaryen married in a single ceremony, after their first husbands died at the crown's hand. She became queen consort at only nineteen, wed barely seven days after being widowed.

Her name remained bound forever to the other so-called Black Brides, three queens Maegor took by force to secure the loyalty of their houses.

Before becoming queen, Elinor had been the wife of Ser Theo Bolling, with whom she had three children. The Kingsguard arrested him on charges of conspiring with Queen Alyssa Velaryon to put her son Jaehaerys on the throne, and he was executed that same day.

Seven days later, once the mourning owed to the Seven had passed, Elinor was summoned before King Maegor to marry him. Her three children were present at the ceremony, a guarantee that the new queen would not resist.

The next day her two eldest sons were sent off as wards to the Eyrie and Highgarden, while her youngest was placed in a wet nurse's care.

The eyeless child

A little more than half a year after the wedding, Elinor fell pregnant by the king, who showered her with gifts and honors and granted her family lands and titles. Before her, Queen Jeyne Westerling had also fallen pregnant, but she gave birth early to a deformed son and died in the process.

Maegor had Queen Tyanna arrested, and she confessed to poisoning both Jeyne and Elinor, foretelling a similar end for her. Two months later, Elinor gave birth to a stillborn child, eyeless and bearing small wings. She survived the birth and recovered.

Chapter 3

Mother Elinor

Books only

It was Elinor who found King Maegor's body fallen upon the blades of the Iron Throne. His death was never explained, and some believed Elinor herself had pushed him onto the throne to avenge Theo Bolling.

After Maegor's death, Lord Daemon Velaryon proposed that the new king, Jaehaerys I, marry Elinor to win back Maegor's former supporters, but nothing came of it. Elinor left King's Landing dressed as a penitent, visited her two eldest sons at the Eyrie and Highgarden, and retired with her youngest son to her father's seat.

Jaehaerys I later charged her with carrying his Doctrine of Exceptionalism across the Seven Kingdoms as one of his Seven Heralds. Elinor accepted, and her queen's robes grew more threadbare with each year until she ended her days as a septa, known as Mother Elinor at the great motherhouse of Lannisport.
