Daemon Velaryon

Not to be confused with Daemon Velaryon (son of Aethan).

Daemon Velaryon was Lord of the Tides and head of House Velaryon, lords of Driftmark, in the years when Aegon Targaryen set out to conquer the rest of Westeros. When the king formed his first council, he chose Daemon to command the royal fleet, the first Master of Ships the Seven Kingdoms ever had.

He is remembered for that, and for the campaign he led against the Vale of Arryn, the only one of the great houses that refused to bend the knee to the new king.

Chapter 1

The first Master of Ships

Books only

Daemon led House Velaryon when Aegon Targaryen gathered his bannermen before setting out to conquer the rest of Westeros; the lords of Driftmark answered the summons. The known chronology leaves open the chance that Daemon was an uncle or brother of Valaena Velaryon, Aegon's own mother.

After crowning himself King of the Seven Kingdoms, Aegon put Daemon in charge of his fleet as the first holder of the office of Master of Ships, a post that had not existed before in the realm.

Chapter 2

The failed taking of Gull Town

2 BCBooks only

House Arryn refused to submit to the new king, and Aegon tasked his Master of Ships with putting down that resistance by sea. Daemon led the Targaryen ships against the port guarding the way into the Vale.

The Vale's ships held off the attack and broke the assault; Daemon did not survive the fighting.

Chapter 3

Sons and grandchildren

Books only

He left at least two sons. Aethan inherited his post as Master of Ships under Aegon I, and Corlys came to lead the newly formed Kingsguard as its first commander.

One of Aethan's daughters, Alyssa, later married King Aenys I Targaryen, Aegon's son.
