Franklyn Farman

Franklyn Farman inherited Fair Isle at a difficult time for his house and spent much of his life at odds with the dowager queen Rhaena Targaryen.

Before that, he had already proven himself a soldier: he was the only one of his kin to come back alive from a battle that cost him his grandfather and his uncle.

Chapter 1

The battle beneath the Gods Eye

43 ACBooks only

Franklyn was the eldest son of Marq Farman, with two younger siblings, Elissa and Androw. In 43 AC he took up arms alongside his grandfather, Lord Farman, and his uncle, the heir to the house, backing Prince Aegon Targaryen against King Maegor I on the shore of the Gods Eye.

Of the three Farmans who rode into that fight, only Ser Franklyn came out alive. It fell to him to carry his grandfather's and his uncle's bodies back to Faircastle, a journey that left its mark on him.

Chapter 2

The lord who threw out the queen

50 ACBooks only

Marq Farman died in 50 AC and Franklyn inherited the lordship of Fair Isle. The dowager queen Rhaena Targaryen had been living there for some time, married for about a year to Androw, Franklyn's younger brother. Her presence had become unbearable to him: he felt that lords came to Faircastle to pay court to her rather than to his father, and that she had never shown any gratitude for what the Farmans' loyalty had cost the family. He also resented how close she had grown to his sister Elissa.

Four days after inheriting, Franklyn ordered Rhaena to leave the island with her court, but demanded that Elissa remain behind. That same night the queen mounted Dreamfyre and flew off. The next morning, defying Franklyn, Androw and Elissa also tried to leave. Franklyn went down to the docks with half a dozen men to stop his sister; she answered by spitting at him, and when he tried to force her back, the townsfolk threw him onto a boat loaded with cod, giving Elissa time to escape. After the incident, he denied her any share of the island's income.

Chapter 3

The queen's return

55 ACBooks only

In 55 AC, after the disappearance of Princess Aerea Targaryen, Rhaena came back to Fair Isle looking for her. The years since had softened nothing between her and Franklyn, and he received her as harshly as ever.

The queen answered his hostility with a veiled threat, hinting at what her dragon Balerion would have enjoyed doing to his family. Ser Franklyn was remembered as a brave man of arms, but not a careful one, and that reputation stayed with him to the end of his feud with the queen.
