Rhaena Targaryen

Rhaena Targaryen was a princess of House Targaryen, the second daughter of King Aegon III and Queen Daenaera Velaryon.

She took the habit of a septa of the Faith of the Seven, and her name became tied to a dispute over the succession to the Iron Throne.

Rhaena was born in 147 AC, the second daughter and fourth child of King Aegon III Targaryen and Queen Daenaera Velaryon. Her brothers Daeron and Baelor and her sister Daena had come before her; a younger sister, Elaena, would follow years later.

Chapter 2

The undone marriage

In 161 AC King Daeron I fell in Dorne, and the throne passed to his brother Baelor. The new king asked the Septon Supreme to annul his own marriage to Daena, his sister, arguing it had never been consummated.

With the marriage undone, Baelor shut Rhaena away together with Daena and Elaena in chambers of the Red Keep that would come to be known as the Maidenvault, to keep them out of his sight. Rhaena was fourteen.

Chapter 3

Ten years of obedience

Through the decade she spent shut away, Rhaena never questioned her brother's decision, unlike her sisters. Under Baelor's heavy influence, she took her vows and ended up wearing the habit of a septa of the Faith.

Chapter 4

A crown that never came

Books only

At King Baelor I's death, lords and commonfolk alike claimed the throne for Princess Daena, the eldest of Aegon III's living children. But the precedents of the Great Council of 101 AC and of the earlier civil war were invoked, and with them any claim of Daena, Rhaena, or Elaena to inherit was set aside.

The throne ended up in the hands of their uncle, Viserys II Targaryen.

Chapter 5

The septa of gold and silver

Books only

Descriptions of Rhaena paint her as beautiful and gentle in manner, with the full figure and full lips also attributed to her sister Daena. She favored silk dressed with golden thread, and embroidered scenes from the Faith onto her own clothes. Her hair ran gold and silver, more gold than silver, always carefully kept.
