Melessa Tarly
Melessa Florent
Melessa Florent is the Lady of Horn Hill, wife of Lord Randyll Tarly and mother of Samwell Tarly, the Night's Watch brother whose relationship with his father shapes much of his story.
She never appears in person in the tale, yet her name resurfaces whenever Sam imagines a place where he might still belong.
Chapter 1
The daughter of the Reach
Melessa was born into House Florent, daughter of Alester Florent and Melara Crane, and later married Randyll Tarly, Lord of Horn Hill. With him she had two sons, Samwell and Dickon, and several daughters, among them Talla.
When Samwell returned from a stay at the Reach, it was Melessa who told him his father's plans: to place him as cupbearer and page in the service of Paxter Redwyne, Lord of the Arbor.
Chapter 2
The plan for Gilly
Far from the Wall, Samwell tells Jon Snow of an idea to get Gilly and her baby out: send them south, passing the boy off as Sam's own bastard son. Sam assumes his mother would back the plan without hesitation.
He trusts that Melessa would take Gilly in at Horn Hill, find her a place among the servants, and that this, compared with life under Craster, would be far easier to bear.
Chapter 3
A mother's pride
Aboard the Cinnamon Wind, bound for the Citadel, Sam thinks of his mother again. He imagines that seeing him dressed in black might finally make her proud of him.
