Ronald Storm is the bastard son of Ser Ronnet Connington, castellan of Griffin's Roost, and bears the name of his grandfather. He grows up at the family stronghold in the Stormlands, alongside his uncles, acknowledged by his father despite being born out of wedlock.

When his great-uncle Jon Connington takes Griffin's Roost, Ronald is taken prisoner along with the rest of the family. He is a fierce boy, trying to bite one of the soldiers who capture him, and only calms down when his uncle subdues and threatens him.
Later, Lord Jon holds a feast and invites Ronnet's family to sit at his table. Ronald warns him that his father will kill him for sitting there.
He is red-haired and resembles Ronnet in looks; those who see him call him a fierce child.
