Griffin's Roost

The stronghold rises from those crags, rough water pounding three of its sides. There is a single approach, watched over by a gatehouse and facing a bare spit of rock called the Griffin's Throat; anyone wanting to take the castle first has to cross a natural bridge, exposed to archers in the two round towers flanking the main gate.

Inside, the great hall holds the carved, gilded seat from which the Connington lords have ruled, beneath stained-glass windows of red and white lozenges and walls hung with old spears, swords and warhammers. The east tower, the tallest, looks out over the woods, the crags and the open sea; there are also stables, an armory, barracks and a rookery by the maester's tower. Two hidden passages — one beneath the altar of the Mother in the sept, another under the northwest tower — lead to a secret refuge and to a cove that only shows itself at low tide.

King Jaehaerys I and Queen Alysanne flew by dragon toward Storm's End, summoned by the approaching death of Alysanne's mother at Blackhaven; the retinue following them by land passed Griffin's Roost on the way.

Lord Armond Connington liked to climb the east tower to look out over the woods and crags of his lands. When Prince Rhaegar Targaryen stopped at the castle for a fortnight on his way back from Dorne, it was Armond's son Jon who showed his friend the same view.

At the welcoming feast held the night of his arrival, Rhaegar played the harp in the hall; the song brought more than one of the women present to tears.

During Robert's Rebellion, Lord Jon Connington was named Hand of the King. Defeat at the Battle of the Bells cost him the post: he lost his titles, and Griffin's Roost passed into the crown's hands.

Once Robert Baratheon sat the throne, a cousin of Lord Jon who had fought on the rebel side was given the castle with the title Knight of Griffin's Roost, though the lands that came with it were now far smaller.

Years later, the Golden Company seized the castle under the command of a young man calling himself Aegon Targaryen, and handed it over to Lord Jon Connington, now Hand of the King to that claimant. The rest of the Connington family was locked away in the castle's own cells.
