House Errol of Haystack Hall

When Aegon the Conqueror marched on the Stormlands, the lord of Haystack Hall did not bend the knee: he stayed loyal to Argilac Durrandon, the region's last king. Together with the lords Fell and Buckler, he ambushed Orys Baratheon's vanguard as it forded the Blackwater Rush on its way to Storm's End. They struck from the trees, killed a thousand men, and vanished back into the woods before anyone could give chase.

The answer came from the sky. Rhaenys Targaryen, riding Meraxes, burned the whole forest to erase any trace of the ambush, and Lord Errol died in those flames.

Generations later, the house first backed Renly Baratheon in his bid for the throne. When he died, the lord of Haystack Hall did not hesitate and threw his forces behind Stannis, the other brother with a claim to the crown.

The name surfaced again during the parley beneath the walls of Storm's End: Ser Cortnay Penrose, listing the men in Stannis's retinue, named a Lord Errol among them, though whether he was the same lord who died years earlier or a successor is unclear.
