The Twins

los Gemelos

The Twins is the double castle House Frey built over the Green Fork of the Trident, wrapped around the only stone bridge that crosses the river along that stretch of the central Riverlands.

Whoever holds the crossing holds the toll: for six hundred years the Freys have made everyone passing through pay for it, which turns the Twins into an unavoidable stop once war breaks out among the Five Kings.

Chapter 1

The Freys' bridge

Books only

It took the Freys three generations to raise the grey stone arch across the Green Fork. Once it stood, they built an identical castle on each bank and an armed tower in the middle of the bridge, and from then on nobody crossed the river there without paying them something for it.

Chapter 2

The widows' fair

137 ACBooks only

In 137 AC, while Aegon III was still a boy, his Hand Torrhen Manderly planned a royal progress for him and his wife: a stop at Winterfell, then south along the Kingsroad to the Twins, where Lady Sabitha Frey would receive them, before riding on to Raventree Hall. Aegon cancelled the trip the moment he came of age, and dismissed Manderly along with it.

Earlier in that same reign, the Twins had already hosted one of the widows' fairs held after the Dance of the Dragons, where local widows married northmen the war had stranded in the south.

Chapter 3

Robb Stark crosses the Green Fork

Books and show

Catelyn Tully negotiated the crossing with Lord Walder Frey, and Robb Stark led his army over the Green Fork on his way to war, leaving four hundred men behind under Helman Tallhart.

Chapter 4

The Red Wedding

299 ACBooks and show

He came back to the Twins for the wedding of his uncle Edmure Tully to Roslin Frey. That night House Frey broke guest right: Robb Stark, his mother, and most of his men died inside those walls, or were taken prisoner the moment they tried to leave.
