Oldstones

Piedrasviejas

Oldstones is the name river folk gave to the ruins of a castle whose name from before the Andals no one remembers anymore. It was once ruled by the last kings of House Mudd, and the weathered tomb of one of them still stands there.

Mostly it is a crossing place now: a ford and an old bridge over the Blue Fork of the Trident, on the road between Riverrun and the Twins.

Chapter 1

The kings of the Blue Fork

Books only

Oldstones sits on a hill above the Blue Fork of the Trident. It was raised during the Andal Invasion and briefly served as the seat of two kings: Tristifer IV, the Hammer of Justice, who had it built, and his heir Tristifer V. Before them the castle had belonged to House Mudd, whose name eventually gave the ruins their own once its true one was forgotten.

Only ruins remain now: a wall crowning the hilltop, a godswood that outlasted the stonework, and in the old courtyard, badly worn, the tomb of Tristifer IV himself, his carved beard weathered by rain and his hands crossed over the haft of a war hammer. Nearby, an old, narrow bridge still crosses the Blue Fork.

Chapter 2

The bridge the flood took

Books only

In this chapterCatelyn Stark

Catelyn Tully passed close by on the way to a wedding: her brother Edmure's, to one of Lord Walder Frey's daughters at the Twins. She rode with Edmure and her son Robb at the head of three thousand five hundred northern riders out of Riverrun.

The rains had swollen the Blue Fork and swept away the wooden bridge at Fairmarket. Galbart Glover tried to ford the current at Ram's Ford and nearly drowned; one of his riders was not so lucky. The bridge upstream at Oldstones was gone too, so the column had to swing wide and cross through the Hag's Mire instead.

Chapter 3

Lady Stoneheart's band

Books only

Later Oldstones became something else: a hideout for a band that hunted down Freys wherever it found them. Petyr Frey and Merrett Frey were hanged among its ruins by Lady Stoneheart's men.
