Mantarys
Mantarys stands at the northern edge of the Sea of Sighs, roughly halfway along the overland road between Volantis and Meereen. The old Valyrian roads keep it tied to the rest of the coast, yet beyond those roads its name carries little goodwill: travelers who pass through describe a hostile place, almost the stuff of dark legend.
Chapter 1
The Valyrian crossroads
Books only
Valyrian roads leave Mantarys in several directions: east to Bhorash, south to Oros, and west toward a city already reduced to ruins. To the north lies the Sea of Sighs; to the south, the Red Waste gives way to the swamps and forests around Volantis.
No one traveling overland between Volantis and Meereen can skip it: Mantarys sits right at the midpoint, between desert and jungle, a forced stop for any caravan or army trying to cross that stretch.
Chapter 2
The city of monsters
Books only
Tyrion Lannister repeats what is said of Mantarys: a sinister name, that of a "city of monsters." The rumor has some substance — among Yezzan zo Qaggaz's slaves is a two-headed woman who comes from there.
When Daenerys Targaryen looks for allies against Yunkai, she sends three envoys to Mantarys. The answer comes back in a cedar chest: inside, the three men's heads, preserved in brine. Soon after, Mantarys joins the cities rising against Daenerys and Meereen.
