Runestone

Piedra de las Runas

Runestone is the ancestral seat of House Royce, standing in the northern Vale of Arryn, not far from Gulltown. Kings, princes and squires have passed through its halls, and its gates have witnessed disputes that ended in bloodshed.

Chapter 1

The princess's flight

Books only

In her youth, Princess Rhaena Targaryen flew over Runestone on the back of Dreamfyre, her dragon. Nothing more is recorded of the episode than that: a winged silhouette crossing the sky over the Vale.

Chapter 2

The king in the Vale

52 ACBooks only

In this chapterJaehaerys I Targaryen

In the year 52 AC, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen arrived at Runestone during the long progress that took him through the whole Vale of Arryn. It was one more stop on a journey meant to let the crown be seen by its most distant subjects.

Chapter 3

The bored prince

115 ACBooks only

Prince Daemon Targaryen married Lady Rhea Royce, and from then on he would visit Runestone now and again. He never hid what he felt about the place: he found it dull to the point of despair.

When Lady Rhea died in the year 115 AC, Daemon claimed the castle for himself, along with its lands and its incomes. Lady Jeyne Arryn refused the request: Runestone's holdings passed instead to the dead woman's nephew.

Chapter 4

The fugitive squire

134 ACBooks only

In this chapterAegon III Targaryen

Ser Arnold Arryn had served as a squire at Runestone in his youth. Years later, after Lady Jeyne Arryn died in the year 134 AC, he escaped the captivity he was held in and took refuge once more within those same walls.

Ser Corwyn Corbray, one of the regents of King Aegon III Targaryen, came to the castle gates to demand that Arnold be handed over. A crossbowman killed him before he could get an answer, and that shot lit a war across the whole Vale.

Chapter 5

The Lords Declarant

Books only

In this chapterPetyr Baelish

At Runestone, a group of lords of the Vale drafted and signed a document demanding the removal of Lord Petyr Baelish as Lord Protector. It would later be known as the pact of the Lords Declarant.

Meanwhile, Lord Yohn Royce used the gathering to hold a small squires' tourney at the castle. Harrold Hardyng won it, and Lord Yohn knighted him as his prize.
