Sarne

el Sarne

Not to be confused with Sarne (river).

The Sarne is one of the great rivers of northern Essos, a watercourse that today runs through lands ridden by Dothraki khalasars but that legend places among the cradles of civilization, ten thousand years past. At its mouth stands Saath, the last remnant of a kingdom that once spread across its whole basin and that the chronicles record as gone.

Chapter 1

A course between forest and steppe

Books only

The river rises from two distinct branches: the western tributaries have their source in the hills south of Vaes Khadokh, while the eastern ones begin northwest of the Dothraki sea, in what was once called the Sea of Silver. All that flow empties into the Shivering Sea, and Saath and Morosh stand in the delta alongside the ruins of Vaes Graddakh. A Valyrian road crosses the river, linking Vaes Khadokh and Vaes Khewo.

The course is bounded by the Forest of Qohor to the west, the Painted Mountains to the south, and the Dothraki sea to the southeast.

Chapter 2

A cradle of legends

Books only

Legend places the birth of civilization on the banks of the Sarne and its tributaries, ten thousand years ago, with the first cities worthy of the name. From that age come the tales of the Fisher Queens and their floating palace, of hairy men who rode unicorns into war, of the lost city of Lyber, and of kingdoms peopled by centaurs.

Over the centuries the Ibbenese repeatedly tried to seize control of the river's mouth, and those attempts sparked bloody clashes with the cities that guarded it, Saath among them.

Chapter 3

The kingdom of Sarnor and its fall

Books only

Around the Sarne and its tributaries the kingdom of Sarnor once flourished. The Tall Men trace their origin to the hero Huzhor Amai, who united the Gipps, Cymmeri and Zoqora peoples, and the High King of Sarnor kept his seat, Sarnath, upon the river itself. Saath, at its mouth, is now the only remnant left standing of that whole kingdom.

Sarnor vanished after the Doom of Valyria, during the Century of Blood, when the Dothraki conquered, sacked and razed nearly every one of its cities.
