Sarne

el Sarne

Not to be confused with Sarne (river).

The Sarne is one of the great rivers of Essos, a waterway that crosses the northern part of the continent before emptying into the Shivering Sea.

Its banks hold some of the oldest legends of Essosi civilization, and for centuries the river was the heartland of the kingdom of Sarnor.

Chapter 1

A river between two seas

Books only

The Sarne is fed by two branches: its western tributaries rise in the hills near Vaes Khadokh, while the eastern ones begin further north, close to the Dothraki Sea, in what was once called the Silver Sea. The river ends its course in the Shivering Sea, and near its mouth stand Saath and Morosh, along with the ruins of Vaes Graddakh.

An old Valyrian road crosses the river, linking two cities further inland. To the west lies the Forest of Qohor, to the south the Painted Mountains, and to the southeast the Dothraki Sea opens out.

Chapter 2

Cradle of civilization

Books only

Legend places the birth of the first true cities here, ten thousand years ago during the Dawn Age, raised along the Sarne and its tributaries. Tales tell of queens who ruled from a palace that floated upon the Silver Sea, of hairy warriors who rode unicorns into battle, of the lost city of Lyber, and of peoples with the bodies of centaurs.

Chapter 3

The wars for the river mouth

Books only

Control over the river's outlet to the sea has been a recurring source of conflict: the Ibbenese have tried to seize it more than once over the ages, and each attempt has led to bloody clashes with Saath and neighboring Sarys.

Chapter 4

The kingdom of Sarnor and its fall

Books only

Around the Sarne and its tributaries the kingdom of Sarnor rose to prosperity. The Tall Men trace their origin to the hero Huzhor Amai, who united the Gipps, Cymmeri and Zoqora peoples; Sarnath, seat of their High King, stood upon the river itself.

The Doom of Valyria brought on the Bloodless Century, during which the Dothraki conquered and razed nearly every city of the kingdom. Of Sarnor, only Saath remains today, at the mouth of the Sarne.
