Raynald Westerling

Ser Raynald Westerling is the heir to House Westerling and the elder brother of Jeyne Westerling, wife of Robb Stark, King in the North. His closeness to Robb makes him one of the few companions the young king keeps through the war, in a retinue that has already lost Jon Snow and Theon Greyjoy.

He is described as a young, thin knight with a cheerful manner, good teeth, a thick mop of brown hair and a bushy mustache, wearing a sand-coloured surcoat trimmed with seashells. When Robb travels to the Twins for the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey, Raynald is the only Westerling who goes with him, serving as the king's own standard-bearer.

The king's standard-bearer

299 ACBooks only

Raynald is the eldest son of Gawen Westerling and Sybell Spicer, and heir to the Crag. When his sister Jeyne marries Robb Stark, the wedding breaks the betrothal Robb had made to a daughter of Walder Frey, lord of the Twins. Raynald joins the king's retinue and returns with him to Riverrun from the westerlands.

Catelyn Tully notices that Robb enjoys Raynald's company, and thinks he fills, in some way, the place left by Jon Snow and Theon Greyjoy. When the king rides to the Twins for the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey, Raynald is the only Westerling who travels with him, as the royal standard-bearer.

At the Twins, Grey Wind threatens several Frey men, and Robb orders Raynald to shut the direwolf in the kennels, keeping him out of the sight of wary hosts. It is the last order Catelyn sees him receive before the wedding turns into the Red Wedding, where Raynald dies in 299.

In this chapterTywin Lannister

After the Red Wedding, the Iron Throne pardons the Westerlings for their part in the plot against the Starks. Sybell asks Jaime Lannister about her son's fate and recalls that Tywin Lannister had promised to find him a wife from Casterly Rock; she insists Raynald knew nothing of the bargain his father had struck.

Jaime promises to pay his ransom if he is still alive, and tells her the bride chosen for him is Joy Hill, the bastard daughter of Gerion Lannister. When he asks the Freys about him, Edwyn Frey and Walder Rivers tell him that Raynald had given up his sword to Whalen Frey, but went back to the stables to free Grey Wind when Frey men-at-arms tried to kill the wolf, and there a crossbow bolt struck him down and he fell into the Green Fork. His body was never identified among the wedding's dead.
