Edwell Celtigar

When Lord Lucas Harroway died in 44 AC, King Maegor I named Edwell Celtigar his Hand. A year later, Maegor marched off to fight the Faith Militant and left the rule of King's Landing to Edwell and Queen Tyanna.

The king had no children, and Edwell urged him to take another wife. He offered his own daughters, Prudence and Prunella, thirteen and twelve years old, and even suggested marrying both. Maegor turned down his Hand's daughters but did take several wives — three in all.

Half a year after one of those weddings, it was Edwell who told the king that Queen Jeyne Westerling was with child. The pregnancy ended early: another royal wife, Tyanna, had poisoned her. Maegor executed her with his own hands, and soon after Edwell gave up the Handship and returned to Claw Isle.

With Jaehaerys I on the throne, Edwell was pardoned, and Lord Rogar Baratheon, the new Hand, named him Master of Coin. Maegor's wars had left the treasury nearly empty, and it fell to Edwell to fill it again.

To do so he laid new taxes on the smallfolk, which earned him widespread hatred without solving the underlying problem. In the sixteenth year of his reign, Jaehaerys returned to King's Landing, removed him from office, and undid nearly all of those taxes.

Edwell returned to Claw Isle, and it was there that death found him. In the winter of 59 AC, a sickness called the shivers reached the Crownlands, and Edwell was one of the first great lords to die of it.

In 130 AC, during the Dance of the Dragons, one of his descendants, Lord Bartimos Celtigar, served as Master of Coin to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and brought back the very same taxes that had cost Edwell so dearly.
