Trystane Martell

Trystane was born in 287 AC, the third and youngest of Doran Martell's children, Prince of Dorne. As a boy he fell ill with a rash of red spots that nearly killed him, though he pulled through.

His parents, Doran and Mellario of Norvos, had married for love, a rare thing among the great houses of Westeros. But Dornish ways and Norvoshi ways never quite fit together, and not long after Trystane's birth, Mellario went back to her home city.

During the War of the Five Kings, Tyrion Lannister, acting as Hand of the King, needed to keep Dorne from siding with his family's enemies. His solution was a marriage pact: his niece Myrcella, the late King Robert's daughter, would wed Trystane.

Doran Martell accepted the arrangement, and the girl travelled to Dorne as the prince's ward, guarded by Ser Arys Oakheart of the Kingsguard.

Trystane and Myrcella got along well during their engagement, spending much of their time over games of cyvasse, a Dornish strategy game. She beat him more often than not, and it never seemed to bother him. Myrcella liked to tease him for setting up his pieces the same way every time: "He always sets up the same way, with all his mountains in front and his elephants in the passes. So I send in my dragon to eat his elephants."

When Princess Arianne schemed to crown Myrcella queen, she had Rosamund Lannister, the girl's companion, take her place without her betrothed noticing. Ser Arys made sure to keep Trystane away from those visits, fearing he would see through the trick.
